  • Enjoying a very gourmet meal at the Brewster hut after a strait up 2.5k climb that took about three hours.
  • The Brewster hut is one of the newer alpine huts in the Souther Alps. It seems to be a popular backcountry ski hut in the winter with excellent slopes right out the back door.

It seems like every swing bridge in New Zealand has its own unique character, this one was along the Copland Track. It's almost impossible to walk across one without taking a picture.
  • Walking up the trail to Welcome Flats Hut on the Copland Track.
  • Crossing yet another swing bridge.
  • Testing the hot springs at Welcome Flats Hut on the Copland Track.

  • The rock bivy just behind the hotsprings on the Copland Track.
  • We got accustomed to having blue sky on the dryer easter side of the island. The weather and vegetation changed dramatically on the Copland Track located on the western side of the island.
  • Copland River.
  • It's not hard to start imagining breaking through the chain-link fence as you wave back and forth while crossing the bridges.
  • The tree fern provides a startling contrast to the turquoise blue of the Copland River.
  • The forests we walked through on the Copland Track were distinctly different from the areas we had been elsewhere in the South Island.

  • Its pretty astounding how many different species of ferns are encountered while tramping through New Zealand it's no wonder it is used so widely for New Zealand marketing not the least as the mascot for the All Blacks rugby team.

  • I couldn't help but check out Fox Glacier primarily for the comparison factor of the glaciers back home. The biggest difference seemed the heavy traffic in the warning signs everywhere for the tourist traffic that came to see the glacier in hoards.
